  • Combined Degree Programme

    Am I entitled to holidays?

Yes. In the combined degree programme, the entitlement to holidays is specified in the Educational Contract (Contract on the Combined Degree Programme) of the company.

During vocational training, dual students shall have the same entitlement to holidays as the other apprentices in that company. The entitlement to holidays for dual students, both for under-age and legal-age students, is based on the Federal Holiday Act. It stipulates a minimum of 20 days holiday entitlement per year (for a 5-day working week). If the holiday entitlement is regulated by a collective agreement and if the agreement is applicable, this regulation applies also to dual students. After the students have passed the final exams at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the regulation for the period after completion of the vocational training and the Federal Holiday Act take effect.

How is the combined degree programme structured?

Duration: 4.5 years – 27.5 months practical training and work, plus 3 months bachelor thesis
Degree and qualification: Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) plus vocational qualification

As a dual student, you start as an apprentice at Kathrein – up until the successful completion of your vocational qualification or until the Contract of Apprenticeship expires. Afterwards you work at Kathrein during practical phases until the end of your studies and get paid for that work.

    1. The combined study programme starts with a practical phase that lasts up to 14 months. During that time, you complete a large part of your vocational training and work in different departments of the company. You attend classes at vocational school together with the regular apprentices or special classes for dual students. After one year at the company, you start your studies at university. You then alternate between university and practical phases.
    2. Normally, you take your Chamber exams (e.g. Chamber of Commerce and Industry or Chamber of Crafts and Trades) in the third year after the practical semester. The date of your final exam may vary depending on the apprenticeship and the study course. The universities can provide you with detailed schedules.
    3. After passing your final vocational exam, you have more practical phases at Kathrein during the lecture-free periods and, if applicable, during additional practical semesters.
    4. The dual degree programme finishes upon completion of the bachelor’s thesis, which you write during your practical phases.
How do I apply for the combined degree programme?

Prospective students should apply directly to us.

After concluding the dual study contract with us, you apply within the regular deadlines for a place at a university (application deadlines: winter semester: April to 15 July, summer semester: December to 15 January).

Is there a contract that regulates the combined degree programme?

You sign a contract with us before the combined degree programme starts. The contract defines the kind and extent of the practical phases, remuneration and holiday entitlement as well as the framework. The Educational Contract supplements the Contract of Apprenticeship by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It has to be completed and is then registered at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

  • Apprenticeship

Where can I find vacancies for an apprenticeship?

On our website and in our job portal. The employment agency (Agentur für Arbeit, BIZ) will also provide help and advice.

What is the proportion of vocational school in the apprenticeship?

That depends on the apprenticeship you choose. There are two options:

    1. You do "block-release" courses at vocational school. That means you alternate between periods at vocational school and periods at work.
    2. You do "day-release" courses at vocational school. That means you go to vocational school on one or two days a week and work at the company on the remaining days. If you want to know which option applies to your dream job, just ask us.
Do I have a supervisor/advisor during my apprenticeship?

Yes. The trainers and training representatives take care of you. In addition, there are designated mentors for each apprentice who support you during the entire apprenticeship and answer your questions. We also have a youth and apprentices’ representation for all your concerns to support and advise you.

Do I get to know different departments during the apprenticeship?

Yes. During the apprenticeship, you work in various departments and get to know all areas that are important for your future job.

How much do I earn during my apprenticeship?

The remuneration for apprentices is based on the Collective Agreement. Currently it is as follows:

    • 1st year of apprenticeship €992
    • 2nd year of apprenticeship €1,045
    • 3rd year of apprenticeship €1,112
    • 4th year of apprenticeship €1,157

In addition to the basic salary, Kathrein partially reimburses commuting expenses and provides subsidised lunch for apprentices in the staff canteen.
