Kathrein Inspires Girls to Go Technical
Maria Weber, Head of Vocational Training, welcomed the girls and emphasised the importance for Kathrein to recruit women as new employees. “We want to encourage girls to look into typical male-dominated careers and we want to make them curious or even enthusiastic about technology, in areas where they can use their talents and interests.
After the welcoming words, the two apprentices Katharina Vodermaier (industrial mechanic) and Anna Pfeilstetter (electronic technician for devices and systems) talked about their jobs and explained why they had chosen an apprenticeship in these professions. Under expert guidance, the participants could then try out their technical skills and build a miniature electronic piano and a table clock with personal laser engraving.
Fourteen-year-old Lea Weinmann, a student at the Städtische Realschule Rosenheim, says: “My sister has already given me a lot of information about various technical jobs. I am interested in maths. That’s why I wanted to attend Girls’Day. It gave me the opportunity to experience technical careers in real life.” Viktoria Randel, also 14, adds: “It was great that we did something completely different to what we do at school every day.”
On Girls’ Day, companies and universities throughout Germany open their doors for schoolgirls from grade 5 and above. The girls learn about apprenticeships, degree programmes and careers in IT, trades, natural sciences and technology, where women are still under-represented. Since its start in 2001, some 1.8 million girls have participated in the programme.
