Kathrein Puts New Data Centre into Operation at its Headquarters
The data centre meets the highest requirements with regard to modern and future-proof data processing. Apart from achieving a high level of cost-efficiency, the main priorities were failure safety and data security, full scalability as well as high-level data and system availability. A low level of energy consumption is made possible by means of an air cooling system. Optimum fire protection is ensured through the installation of a nitrogen fire-extinguishing system. The security of the building is safeguarded through motion sensors and outdoor cameras.
The building also features two independent power supplies as well as a diesel generator for emergencies. Two data lines entering the data centre from different sides of the building ensure safe connection to the Internet. “We can carry out maintenance work or repairs at any time without having to interrupt operation,” says Christian Czech, head of IT infrastructure at Kathrein. The data centre is designed in such a way that it can be upgraded and expanded easily. Currently the rated server load is 60 kilowatts, but up to 180 kilowatts are possible following the installation of two further configuration stages.
The new building’s server room covers approximately 200 square metres of ground space and a further 500 square metres of office space is available for employees. Construction began at the end of 2014 and was delayed by about seven weeks as the soil at the building site was contaminated and had to be disposed of in a special way before building could continue. Since the construction work was carried out in the vicinity of the train station, the explosive ordnance clearing squad was always on hand during the excavation and digging stage. However, nothing turned up except a rusty revolver.
