Racing Ahead

The Belgian telecommunications corporation Telenet is investing some EUR 500 million in its new gigabit network over a period of five years. This will enable data throughput rates of at least 1 gigabit per second. On this European model project, Kathrein is a key supplier for the cable network upgrade in Flanders - a perfect opportunity for the company to contribute its unique expertise in the area of amplifier technology.

Telenet is a leading broadband cable operator in Belgium. The company offers cable TV, high-speed internet, landline and mobile telephone services mainly for private customers in Flanders and Brussels. It also clusters services for businesses in Belgium and Luxembourg under the “Telenet for Business” brand. The upgrade project involves replacing all 150,000 amplifiers throughout the entire cable network in Flanders. The network operator is also replacing approximately 1.8 million other infrastructure components. This will make the northern Belgium cable network the first in Europe to be upgraded to create a gigabit network on this scale.

Kathrein solution

Kathrein supplied up to 75,000 amplifiers for the network upgrade with a bandwidth of 1.2 GHz: their high level of performance and extreme reliability make them a perfect match for the Telenet specifications profile. Other key criteria on a project of this scale are the very low failure rates and low power consumption of the Kathrein amplifiers. The devices are simple to install, thereby minimising the work involved in refitting.

The gigabit network will make Flanders one of the leading regions in Europe in terms of digital infrastructure. Telenet customers will benefit from extremely fast and high throughput rates, e.g. for video broadcasts in HD. Excellent service and customer orientation was another key factor contributing to the success of the project: “We opted for Kathrein based on its well-established expertise and high-performance devices,” says Micha Berger, CTO of Telenet. “Together we will help build the digital future of Flanders. By providing the gigabit network, Telenet is ensuring that both private and business customers have access to the necessary bandwidths.”
