Kathrein intends to sell its antenna and filter business to Ericsson, a leading mobile communications infrastructure provider. Kathrein Products division, with approximately 4,000 employees in research and development, production, and sales at more than 20 locations worldwide, is expected to become part of Ericsson’s Business Area Networks in the third quarter of 2019 following approvals from relevant regulatory authorities.

Project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz have reached two important milestones of the 5G TODAY research project: Kathrein completed an innovative antenna for test operation at BR’s transmitter site in Ismaning near Munich. In addition, a Rohde & Schwarz transmitter successfully went into operation at Bayerischer Rundfunk’s (BR) Wendelstein transmitter station. The specially developed Kathrein antenna and the high-power transmitter are part of the LTE Broadcast test transmission.The 5G TODAY project is funded by the Bavarian Research Foundation and led by the Institute for Broadcasting Technology, IRT. Further project partners are Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) and Telefónica Germany.

In the course of its restructuring process, Kathrein plans to streamline the Products business unit and adapt further central functions to future requirements. In this context, around 250 jobs are to be cut in Rosenheim by the end of next year. Together with the works council and IG Metall union, the company is currently working on socially acceptable solutions for affected employees, which are to be presented at the beginning of 2019.

The Kathrein Group adopts a package of measures for its Solutions business unit – in future, this unit will focus on IoT, the Internet of Things. Business activities in Infotainment & Connectivity Solutions will be discontinued as of 31 March 2019. In addition, the Group develops measures for its Products business unit.

Kathrein makes rapid progress in its strategic reorientation: The company has sold its Automotive division to technology firm Continental. The purchase agreement was signed today. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. Hildesheim-based Kathrein Automotive GmbH is a specialist in transmission and reception systems in vehicles. After antitrust review, the company with its entire staff is planned to be incorporated into Continental in the first quarter of 2019. Kathrein Automotive has more than 1,000 employees at eight locations in Brazil, China, Germany, Mexico, Portugal and the USA.
