K-BOW from Kathrein Distinguished with the iF Design Award

Kathrein has received a globally renowned design award for the design of its K-BOW indoor mobile communications solution. The iF International Forum Design GmbH with headquarters in Hanover, Germany awarded the new system a prize as part of the iF Design Awards 2015. Applicants were many, and the international jury of top-class experts had the challenging task of awarding the coveted seal of quality among almost 5,000 submissions from 53 different countries.

The system developed by Kathrein enables high data transmission quality in buildings, provides capacity in a flexible way according to specific requirements and also saves energy. K-BOW intelligently provides an answer to the problem of weak radio signals in buildings, and live demonstrations have convinced mobile network operators, network equipment providers and building owners of the system's performance capability since the autumn of 2014. Kathrein has established a test centre at their headquarters in Rosenheim, Germany, and three German mobile network operators are supporting the practical trials via active connections in their networks.

Complex technology elegantly packaged

An appealing design was one of the central aims in the K-BOW development phase. The curved, wall-mounted remote unit in silver or white blends harmoniously into its surroundings. "We're highly pleased about this valuable recognition of our work," stated Torsten Wulff, Head of the Kathrein Filter business unit that developed K-BOW. "It wasn't an easy task to unite product design with the demands of the complex system technology," added Dr. Michael Weber, CTO of the Kathrein Group. "Our Product Designer Stefan Weber and his engineering team performed outstanding work, justly highlighted by the decision of the jury."
K-BOW was presented to the public for the first time at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of February 2014, and thereafter at further fairs around the world. Feedback concerning the design of the system was always highly positive, and interested parties were unanimous in complementing the modern and elegant design of the innovative solution as well as its pioneering technical functionality.

A globally renowned design award

The jury of experts was also convinced by the design. Important criteria for evaluation for the jury members were quality of design, machining quality, material selection, level of innovation, environmental compatibility and safety aspects. The iF Design Award is one of the world's most respected design awards, and has been distinguishing products since 1953 that unite functionality, convenience and aesthetic appeal in special ways, and also comply with demands for innovative qualities.
Kathrein is currently preparing for volume production of K-BOW, and the system becomes available on the market for customers from the middle of the year. For detailed information about K-BOW and image material, see www.kathrein.de/en/indoor/.
